Autism is such a funny, frustrating, and interesting thing. It can make you laugh so hard and cry just as much. Today we had a break through with our little Reilly. He's 2 years 6 months and doesn't talk. He has started to make sounds, which is so wonderful.
To communicate he has been screaming and yelling. The past month has been especially difficult. I think he is reaching an age where he understands his wants and needs but can't communicate them. That would be frustrating to anyone. He responds by getting angry and screaming.
I took pictures of all the different foods he enjoys eating. I printed them out and taped them on my oven door. He walked over and took time to look at them all. I started to point at them and say the word that corresponds with the picture.
To my great delight, when I got to milk I heard a tiny little voice say, "MMMKK" HOORAY!!! What an incredible sound from my little man.
Later he ran into the kitchen and pointed at his juice cup on the oven door. I said, "Cup" and got it out for him. Hey, it worked! I really hope the screaming goes down.
It's always nice to be able to communicate.
